Search “airport taxi fare” for any Australian city and you’ll find dozens of well-documented answers. Search for what it costs to get from one ordinary suburb to another, and you’ll find almost nothing — despite that being the trip most people actually take. Taxi-fares.com exists to close that gap, city by city. We’re starting with Sydney, where the full fare picture, tariff structure and toll detail live on our dedicated hub page, with Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide to follow.

Why Suburb-to-Suburb Fares Are Different
Airport transfers are the easiest taxi trips to price-check anywhere in Australia. They tend to run on well-known routes, get discussed constantly online, and often have a predictable rank-and-dispatch pattern that locals and visitors alike have picked apart for years. A trip between two ordinary suburbs is a different story entirely. There’s no standard route, no widely shared benchmark, and no single published source that tells you what a fare between two arbitrary points should look like. Yet this is the overwhelming majority of real taxi travel — getting to work, to a hospital appointment, to a relative’s house across town. Australian cities compound this problem by being large and low-density compared to much of the world, which means suburb-to-suburb distances can be considerable, routes can vary widely, and the cost difference between a direct run and an indirect one can be significant. Without a reliable way to estimate these everyday trips, riders are left guessing every single time — which is precisely the gap this site is built to fill.
How Taxi Fares Work Across Australia
Taxi fares in Australia aren’t governed by one national formula. Each state and territory sets and regulates its own tariff structure independently, covering things like flagfall, per-kilometre and per-minute rates, waiting time charges, and applicable tolls or surcharges. That means a taxi fare in Sydney is calculated under genuinely different rules to a fare in Melbourne or Brisbane — not simply a different number plugged into the same equation. Because of this, we don’t try to apply a single Australia-wide fare formula across the whole site. Instead, we’re building out one city at a time, researching and documenting each city’s actual regulated tariff structure before publishing its fare guide. Sydney is live now, with its detailed tariff breakdown, toll information and fare mechanics covered in full on our dedicated Sydney hub page. Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide are in progress, each to be built on its own state-specific rules once ready.
Taxi vs Uber and DiDi in Australia
Rideshare has become a genuine part of how Australians get around, with Uber operating nationally and standing as the dominant provider, and DiDi established as a real second option in several cities. The key structural difference between rideshare and taxis comes down to pricing behaviour. Taxi tariffs are regulated and metered, so the way a fare is calculated stays consistent regardless of demand. Rideshare pricing is dynamic — it can rise sharply during periods of high demand, bad weather, major events or simply the wrong time of day, meaning the same trip can cost noticeably different amounts depending on when you book it. A taxi fare estimate reflects what the meter will do on an ordinary trip; a rideshare quote is only accurate at the moment you receive it. Knowing this difference matters just as much as knowing the numbers themselves.
