A Brisbane taxi starts from $3.80 flagfall, with $2.77 charged for every kilometre travelled, at the day rate. That flat per-km rate applies for the whole trip with no distance threshold, so a short 2km hop might land around $6-$14, while a longer 9km-plus trip runs from $26 upward. There’s no per-trip levy in Queensland, so those figures are simply flagfall plus distance — the meter does the rest.

How Brisbane Taxi Fares Are Calculated

Every Brisbane taxi runs on a regulated meter with a straightforward structure: a flagfall charged the moment you get in, then a per-kilometre rate that applies flat across the entire journey. Unlike Sydney, where the per-km rate splits at 12km, Brisbane (like Melbourne) charges the same rate whether you’re travelling 1km or 20km. Queensland also has no per-trip levy of any kind — a genuine point of difference from NSW’s Passenger Service Levy or Victoria’s CPV levy, and one less line item on your fare. Waiting time, for traffic or at a request, is charged at $1.04 per minute while the taxi is stationary.

  • Flagfall: $3.80 (day) or $6.20 (evening/weekend/public holiday)
  • Per-kilometre rate: $2.77/km, flat for the whole trip
  • Waiting time: $1.04 per minute while stationary
  • No per-trip levy — Queensland charges none
  • Card surcharge: up to 5% of the total fare

Fares are reviewed annually each 1 July by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, so the figures here reflect the current sticker rate.

What Increases a Brisbane Taxi Fare?

The metered base fare is only part of the story — several genuine factors can push a Brisbane taxi fare higher:

  • Heavy traffic: waiting time is charged at $1.04/min whenever the taxi is stationary
  • Travelling between midnight and 5am, when a $2 late-night surcharge applies on top of the evening flagfall
  • Tolls such as AirportlinkM7, Legacy Way or the Go Between Bridge — but only if you request or agree to a tolled route; an untolled alternative can usually be asked for instead
  • The Brisbane Airport access fee of $4.86, which applies automatically to fares departing the airport specifically, not arriving
  • Longer routes, diversions, or road closures that add distance to the trip

Evening and Late Night Taxi Rates in Brisbane

Queensland’s day tariff only applies weekdays between 7am and 7pm, excluding public holidays — so a Saturday afternoon trip, a Sunday, or any weekday evening after 7pm is already charged at the higher evening/weekend rate of $6.20 flagfall plus $2.77/km. Late at night, between midnight and 5am on any day except ANZAC Day, an additional $2 late-night surcharge applies on top of the evening flagfall, bringing it to $8.20, with the same $2.77/km rate. It’s a narrower day window than many riders expect, so plenty of ordinary weekend trips end up on the evening tariff rather than the cheaper day rate.

Taxi vs Uber and DiDi Cost in Brisbane

Uber operates fully across Brisbane and Queensland and is the dominant rideshare option, with DiDi as a genuine second choice. Both work on dynamic pricing, meaning fares rise with demand — a meaningful difference from the fixed, metered structure taxis use.

  • Taxis: fixed metered rates set by the Queensland tariff, the same regardless of demand or time booked
  • Uber/DiDi: prices shift with demand, weather, events and time of day — a quote can jump sharply during surge periods
  • Taxis: card surcharge capped at up to 5% of the fare
  • Rideshare: pricing is only shown as an upfront quote at the time of booking, not a published tariff

For predictable pricing, especially at peak times or late at night, a metered taxi can work out more consistent than a surging rideshare fare — though rideshare can undercut taxis outside of surge.

Brisbane Taxi Prices Explained

Searches for brisbane taxi fares and brisbane cab prices usually come down to one question: what will the meter actually show? Under Queensland taxi rates, every fare starts with a flagfall — $3.80 by day, $6.20 in the evening or on weekends and public holidays — then adds $2.77 for every kilometre travelled, at a flat rate with no distance banding. There’s no per-trip levy anywhere in the Queensland structure, which sets it apart from some interstate markets. Add waiting time at $1.04 a minute in heavy traffic, a possible toll if you request a tolled route, and the $4.86 airport access fee if you’re leaving Brisbane Airport by taxi, and you’ve got the full picture of how a Brisbane cab fare is built up. These are metered fares, reviewed each July by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, with no statutory maximum — the total simply reflects distance, time and tariff period.

Is a Brisbane Taxi Worth It?

  • Door-to-door travel without walking to a stop or station
  • Carrying luggage, especially to or from the airport
  • Predictable, no-surge pricing at peak times or late at night
  • Groups, where one metered fare can beat several rideshare or public transport fares combined
  • Late-night travel when public transport has stopped running

It’s less compelling for short, well-served inner-city trips or off-peak solo journeys where a CityCat ferry or train covers the same ground for a fraction of the cost.
